Ottawa's Howard Jewellers opened its doors in 1967, a Centennial project for the then 21-year-old Ottawa-native Howard Appotive. Filled with confidence and backed by a gemmological diploma from the Gemmological Insitute of America, Howard started operations with an Ottawa Jewellery store in the Blackburn Building in downtown Ottawa on Sparks Street.

Designing, manufacturing and selling to other retail stores in the area was the initial goal, however after just a few months it soon became clear that Howard's unique and distinctive Ottawa custom design jewellery was setting him apart from the others. Orders were flooding in and Howard made a decision to not only manufacture diamond jewellery in Ottawa but to become a retail operation selling custom designed diamond jewellery, diamond engagement rings, designer watches, precious gems and fine gold pieces.

The business was lovingly honed and soon included a staff of five plus Howard's (now late) mother Sheva and sister Debra in sales. Howard's younger brother David was studying gemmology in New York City, soon graduated and joined his family's Ottawa jewellery store. At the same time, Howard was accepted into the prestigious New York Diamond Dealers Club, an organization exclusive to only a handful of Canadian diamond

. This membership allows Howard Jewellers to purchase diamonds directly from diamond dealers around the world. This direct buying results in offering lower prices for Howard customers.

Ten years of growth and development led to the next phase - a street level location. The Appotive brothers purchased a building at 200 Sparks Street -- in the heart of Ottawa's downtown shopping district -- and transformed it into one of the most innovative diamond jewellery stores in Canada. Over the decades the store has flourished and has evolved into a fine jewellery house showcasing internationally renowned designers and watches such as Tacori, Jeff Cooper, Hearts on Fire, Furrer, Jacot, Rolex, and Tudor.

Custom design work is a major part of the success story of Howard Jewellers and it is that creativity that continues to keep them well out in front as one of Canada's leading Jewellers and custom designers.
